Google’s YouTube, the most widely used video platform, is finally, yes finally getting a makeover on desktop. Plus, the platform is also getting a brand new logo and icon which is the first-ever major change made to YouTube logo since its launch 12 years ago! The multi-billion company had been testing material design based changes for a long time now and previewed the refreshed look back in May, which is finally been rolled out. And to add the cherry on top, the company is even bringing some great updates to the Android and iOS YouTube apps.
The Brand New Logo!
Starting off with the very new logo, surprisingly loses the emphasis on tube and adds the YouTube’s iconic play button with the all new font and color. Google says this new logo – a cleaned yet cool version of the YouTube signature icon – was designed to be more adjustable and flexible across devices of varying screen sizes. As for smaller screens, YouTube can just use the icon alone to abbreviate its logo, while still making it easy to spot. The company has planned to roll out the new logo and icon across desktop and mobile today, before launching it on any other apps and services.
The New Desktop Design
To begin with, the desktop gets a great “dark mode”! Yes, a dark mode especially designed for nighttime viewing giving YouTube a more cinematic feel. Unfortunately, this feature is not making its way to the YouTube’s mobile app as of now.
A new look for the desktop that emphasizes more on Google’s Material design aesthetic. Less red, more white space and extra room for video thumbnails.
The other desktop includes, the tuck away feature that is the left-side navigation window can now be tucked away with a click on the hamburger menu, with that the size and placement of key elements and the overall squeaky white clean look.
The All New Mobile App Upgrades
Now, the mobile app is the real steal, as they have rolled out some really amazing upgrades for the app.
Following the desktop, the mobile app got Material design too; this includes its own take on the cleaner redesign with more white space and no big gaudy red banner on top, instead a clear white one. The navigation bar for a change has been moved to the bottom, making it easier to be accessed with the thumbs. Along with a new refreshing mobile layout, variable speed, a popular desktop feature, is now on mobile.
There are also new Library and Account to make it easier to access the things you’re looking for, says Google.
The app will also now include the feature to speed up and slow down the playback of a video, just the way you do on desktop, additionally the mobile app is getting an adaptive player, that is, new player will change its shape automatically to match the video format being viewed. The feature was teased this summer, noting that the rise in vertical video was among the reasons to roll out a more adaptive player.
Another launched upgrade suggests videos while you’re watching in full-screen mode.
